NewSpeak ("we", "our", or "us") is an AI-powered language learning app. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and your choices.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the minimum data needed to run the app:

Voice recordings — captured while you use the speaking practice features. These recordings are transmitted to third-party AI services (see Section 3) for transcription and feedback. Recordings are not stored on our servers.
Spoken text (transcriptions) — your voice is converted to text and sent to AI services to generate conversation responses and pronunciation feedback.
Usage data — your chosen username, avatar selection, XP, streaks, and practice history are stored locally on your device using AsyncStorage and are never transmitted to our servers.

2. How We Collect Data

Data is collected in real time when you actively use AI-powered features such as AI Voice conversation, Roleplay Scenarios, Hear & Repeat, and Daily Missions. The app requests your explicit permission before accessing your microphone. No data is collected passively in the background.

3. Third-Party AI Services — Data Sharing

NewSpeak shares data with the following third-party AI services to deliver its core features. By using the app you consent to this sharing, as disclosed in the in-app consent screen presented before first use.

OpenAI (Privacy Policy)
What is sent: your voice recordings (as audio or transcribed text) and conversation messages.
Purpose: transcription, AI conversation responses, and pronunciation feedback.
Retention: subject to OpenAI's data retention policies. OpenAI does not use API data to train models by default.
Neuphonic (Privacy Policy)
What is sent: AI-generated text responses.
Purpose: converting text to spoken audio for playback in the app.
Retention: subject to Neuphonic's data retention policies.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with any other third parties beyond those listed above.

4. User Consent

Before accessing any AI-powered feature, NewSpeak presents an in-app disclosure screen that identifies what data is sent and to whom, and requires the user to actively agree. You may withdraw consent by deleting the app.

5. Data Storage

All user preferences and progress (username, avatar, XP, streaks) are stored locally on your device. We do not maintain a user account system or store this data on our servers.

6. Microphone Access

NewSpeak requests access to your device microphone solely to record your spoken practice sessions. Audio is sent to OpenAI for transcription and is not retained by NewSpeak.

7. Children's Privacy

NewSpeak is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by updating the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
